Roles in media, how they are portrayed, looked at etc.
Chapter 1 - Introduction
My
Report is respectively that of 'The Portrayal of Gender in Visual
Media.' By just reading the title, many different types of examples flew
through my brain. First of all, gender
is different to sex. Sex is what we are born with, being the biology of
our bodies. On the other hand, gender is our attitudes and behaviors
associated with sex. These two are interchangeable.
These
attitudes came from forms of social conditioning through media. This
includes being aware what it means to be a particular gender and
anything related. Gender is being looked at as less as being pink OR blue, but
more of a spectrum. Gender is a tricky concept to understand, but for
the sake of the report, the main idea of gender will be discussed in the
portrayal in visual media.
What
comes to mind first when brainstorming about how gender is portrayed in
visual media includes forms of advertising, films, TV shows, music
videos(music industry) and the fashion industry.
So HOW are different gender's portrayed in media?
Girls
are usually portrayed as gentle, nurturing and emotional people. Other
factors include being verbal, kind, home-oriented, dependent, talkative,
easily influenced, submissive, physically weak, afraid, fearful,
troublesome, asks for advice and described as physically attractive.
Boys,
on the other hand, are usually portrayed as being independent, dominant
and tough. Other factors include being active, logical, not nurturing,
blunt, sometimes cruel, worldly, physically strong, assertive,
unemotional, problem solver, gives advice, hero, and brave.
The
effect of gender portrayed in media is greater than you can picture. A
simple example might help. Everywhere you go or everything you see, you
are always confronted by images of men or women somewhere, be it an
advertisement or not. Images may influence you and how you think
consciously or subconsciously. When I say subconsciously, it is
referring to the psychoanalysis part of your brain. Psychoanalysis was a
school of thought by Sigmund Freud. Sigmund Freud was interested in why
we do what we do and why we think what we think. Psychoanalysis is a
psychological theory about human nature, motivation, development, behavior, and experience. It includes things that you want to do however know that they are wrong or inappropriate.
Without even realizing, media effects people's identities, their characters and how they see the world around them.
Women
are underrepresented in movies and TV shows. If you tell a director
that there are many more male main characters than women, they will
reply with an 'I know.' The importance of gender roles in media has not
yet been fully aware, or it is not being informed. Men, on the other hand, are seen as having longer careers based on their success, whereas women are seen to have shorter career status' and are looked at on looks or youth.
Chapter 2
Now that the base of the portrayal of gender in visual media has been placed, a deeper look at the issue must follow.
Dr. Stacy L. Smith
from the Annenberg School for Communication and Crystal Allene Cook
from the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media conducted an institute
study. Together, they had a look at 13 female leads in G-rated films,
such as Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, Wizard of
Oz, Cinderella and Little Mermaid. The study had shocking results. It
was found out that all women were praised for their beauty. With how the
women were portrayed, they would make women believe that they had to be
beautiful and must be able to fall in love. This is something that really struck me as a person.
Something
so simple as a children's film or should I say 13 children films, would
subconsciously make young girls believe that they must be beautiful to
find a lover in the future, they must be beautiful in order to acquire
or reach their goals and dreams AND they must be able to fall in love if they ever want to get anywhere in life. You might be
thinking 'How can this be? They never mentioned that!' That is how
subconscious psychology works. They showed it, without saying it. This
is because the women in these films are the main characters and children look up to them. Without wanting to or knowing, the children will see that as the key to success, whatever it might be for them at the time.
This is ALL because of media's power. It is so strong that it has the power to represent what is concidered as 'socially acceptable.'
