Register – When discussing register, you must back up your point/s with valid information. This could be from the article itself (references). Whether text is formal, informal, direct, indirect or anything in between, register goes hand in hand with tone. Consultative is another example of register(intended to give professional advice or recommendations.). Metaphors and certain expressions are not used in formal register. Metaphors go under the casual register. By using ‘I’ or ‘Hey’ or anything in between is under casual register. The vocabulary used does not make it formal or casual. Casual register with people you don’t know (take in writing text) is not good. When you are observing register, formal never addresses people like ‘you’.
Tone – Tone is the way the information is presented verbally. It is the way it is told. Tone could be emotional, humorous, sarcastically, manipulation or anything in between.
Text Type – The type of text could be tender, call for tender etc. Text type could be persuasive, informational, historical, a report etc (check photo taken in class).
Other text types include:
- procedure(instructions)
- procedural recount
- factual description
- historical account
- information report
- persuasive writing(exposition/discussion)
Format – Format is how you are presenting something rather than where. Things that are included in format are links, end-notes, footnotes (ex: terms & conditions), having an abstract (an abstract is a summary at the beginning – abstract goes under format & layout)
Layout – Layout is a mix of paragraphs and points. Discuss the actual layout of the article or text provided. Ex: 4 columns of text, 5 columns of text, an image boxed in text, image/s above the text given. Layout could also describe indentations, quotations, font size or change in font size, vertical space etc.
Vocabulary – This has to do with vocabulary, letters or language used. Also included under vocabulary is objectivity, clarity, accuracy
